The uttarīya is a loose upper body garment that was worn by both men and women in ancient India. It is known to us as the angavastram/dupattā of today. This uttarīya is made with non-violent mulberry silk, one of the most luxurious fabrics in the world. Embroidered onto this garment is a sacred shloka from the maṅgalāṣṭaka, dedicated to Viṣṇu. Also embroidered on it are auspicious marks of Viṣṇu.
